Couples psychotherapy
Couples therapy gives you both a space to be heard by someone with no stake in who is right. It is not only for relationships in crisis. Plenty of the people I see simply want to understand each other better, or to stop the same argument from slowly wearing things down.
Who couples therapy is for
You do not have to be at breaking point for this to be worth doing. Some couples come because things have become difficult. Others come while things are broadly fine, wanting to strengthen what they have or to navigate a change together before it turns into a problem.
Issues couples bring to therapy
The work often turns on communication that has broken down, arguments that repeat without ever resolving, difficulties with intimacy or adjusting together to something that has shifted: a new baby, a house move, a change of career or simply the sense of having grown in different directions.
How couples work is different
Unlike individual therapy, you are both in the room. Part of my job is making sure each of you feels heard. The other part is noticing what happens between you. For example, the moment things escalate, the point at which one of you stops speaking. Seeing those patterns as they occur, rather than describing them afterwards, is usually what makes them possible to change. You can read more about the thinking behind this on the approach page.
